Mayor and Council

The Lafayette City Council is composed of a mayor and six councilors. The councilors serve for a term of four years, and the mayor serves for a term of two years. The City Council is the legislative branch of our local government. The Council adopts laws called ordinances, sets policies, adopts the budget, and conducts public meetings.

Regular Meetings

The City Council holds regular meetings on the second Thursdays of every month at 6:30 p.m.  Meetings are generally held in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 486 Third Street, Lafayette.

Four members of the City Council must be present for the City Council to take action on any item. The Mayor presides over the City Council, but the Mayor only votes in the case of a tie of the Council.

Input from the Public

Every regular meeting of the Lafayette City Council contains an item called "Citizen Input on Non-Agenda Items." During this time, any person may speak to the City Council about any item, not already on the agenda, they think the Council should discuss.  Additionally, comments regarding specific items on the agenda may be directed to the Mayor and Council during discussion of that topic.
